uThungulu Surfriding held their first trial of 2016 in good condtions and fine weather at Zinkwazi on Sunday. (Photos by May Knoetze)

Contestants were greeted with smooth, glassy waves in the 2/3 foot range on a high tide that made it a bit tricky to find a good wall to work with. Waves that looked like they were going to run faded and ones that looked like nothing stood up tall for riders to crank some powerful turns. There was also a bit of a current running down the beach and contestants had to keep paddling up the point to stay in position.

Trials Reminder for Surfers

Reminder to all surfers that uThungulu Surfriding are having their first of three trial events this Sunday at Zinkwazi Beach. The trials are to choose the various age group teams that will represent uThungulu District at the SA Open, Junior and Masters Champs during the year. Registration is from 7am and competitors are urged to enter before Sunday. See for more information.

In 2016 SA Masters Surfing Championships will revert to a “stand alone” event going forward. ( It will not be combined with the SA Champs as it was during our 50th Anniversary event in Richards Bay).

Tamarys is uThungulu Surfer of the year

On an evening of accolades and pats on the back for an amazing year of surfing in 2015, it was Tamarys de Maroussem who was crowned uThungulu’s top surfer at the Annual General Meeting and prize giving held on 28 January at the Zululand Yacht Club.
