Master Class at Alkantstrand

uThungulu Surfriding, formerly Zululand Surfriders Association, held their first trial contest for the 35 years and over divisions on Sunday 10 May at Alkantstrand Beach, Richards Bay.

The Master surfers, some of whom are the best in the country, put on an excellent display of surfing despite the small surf on offer. The conditions were great however with an offshore breeze blowing the whole day, sunny skies and a really good atmosphere on the beach. Competition was fierce with as little as two spots available in certain divisions that will make up the team to represent the district at the SA Surfing Champs to be held locally in August.

uThungulu Surfriders Trial 2 results

uThungulu Surfriders held their second trial for their Junior and Opens this passed Sunday at Zinkwazi Beach.

The event was held in difficult 3 to 4 foot surf in strong north-east winds with the odd 6 foot set coming through to test the competitors skills. A couple of riders also ended up pushed into the rocks with Liam de Villiers hurting his shoulder in the process. There was some great surfing action from both Liam and Matt Pallet, the latter pushing the envelope with a huge air reverse in his heat. Rides had predominantly 2 to 3 moves per wave in the tricky conditions and Matt’s winning ride had five moves on his wave.
