The third and final trial event for 2016 took place next to the pier at Alkantstrand Beach, Richards Bay on Sunday 10 April.
The surf was contestable with a few good rights coming through but had dropped dramatically from the previous day where huge surf bombarded the East Coast. Local surfers got to enjoy the seldom ridden surf spots of Senoritas and the Oyster Bank with the swell coming through the harbour entrance at the right direction. Pelican Island was also breaking well with the usual crew all over the long, running 3 footers.
The trial event drew just nine competitors with positions sorted and filled in the first two trials resulting in just two action filled heats. The first heat was a mix and match of open mens, U/20s and ladies. Garth Bowman was ripping up the rights all the way to shore and took a narrow win over Allan Johns who got going with a well worked wave with a little air at the end and the highest wave score of the heat. Keegan Smith had a great heat and took third over Liam de Villiers with Monique Botha in 4th and Cameron Dreyer in 5th. The second trial was a battle for team positions with the winner and runner up going to Seal Point and third place bowing out. Anton Knoetze took the win, York Lawrence placed second and John Cawood took the third place and the handshake.
Thank you to Anton and Judy for setting up and to the judges and a big thank you to Judy for sticking around while the guys had a bit of free surf photo session afterwards. Teams for the various SA Championships will be announced soon so keep an eye out on the ZO, Facebook page and www.zulusurfriders.co.za
