Great results for local surfers at SA Champs

Team uThungulu placed 4th overall at the South African Masters Surfing Championships which finished on Sunday at Seal Point, Cape St. Francis.

A solid performance from the team saw them place behind Ugu District (KZN South Coast - 3rd and in front of the team from Cape Town in 5th. It was a close battle for first place in the team standings which saw Buffalo City (formerly Border) take the narrowest of wins over hosts Nelson Mandela Bay. The Buffalo City team dedicated their 10th win to teammate and South African Surfing Legend, O/60 SA Champ Dave Fish who passed away the week before.

Team uThungulu proudly produced two finalists in Vince King (40+) and Robin Lavery (50+) who ended in overall 2nd and 3rd places respectively for their divisions. Other standouts helping the team to their lofty position was a semi-final position for Bushy Greeff (55+), quarter finals placings for Allan Johns (35+), Dave Petersen and Mike Frew (40+) and Round 3 positions for Daryl Adamson (45+), Fred le Roux (50+) and Calla Esterhuysen (60+).

The event featured over 140 surfers from eight districts and was held in changing conditions and contestable surf highlighting the skills of some of South Africa’s most competitive surfers in the Over 30 to Over 60 age groups. World Champions, National team members, provincial champions and former professional surfers from as far back as the mid 70’s posted some high scoring rides throughout the week, underlining South Africa’s strength in the masters age groups.
